A Holiday Story That Will Generate
Christmas Family Magic
"The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
Deuteronomy 31:8
Have you ever admired a holiday ornament and felt a whirlwind of emotions? Like the little girl whose eyes are fixed on her family's worn-out, artificial Christmas tree, there's a story waiting to unravel beneath those branches. When you read "Scent of Pine" with your family, you will discover why this old tree, devoid of candy canes, holds such a special place in this charming children's book, perfect for your coffee table.
Hello, friends! How is your festive season unfolding?
As the air fills with cheer, I know that Christmas might not be "the most wonderful time of the year" for everyone. It's a season that can stir a cocktail of emotions—joy for some, sorrow for others who miss their loved ones. This bittersweet symphony reminds us of the love that once was and continues to linger in our hearts.
So, how has your holiday journey been thus far? Have you cherished more joyous moments or felt the world's weight more often as you celebrate? Share your experiences with me in the comments below; I would love to hear from you.
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18
In the chaos of holiday preparations and life's demands, we often forget the most vital gift—grace. Have you been too hard on yourself lately, giving endlessly yet feeling depleted? Remember that offering grace to yourself is essential, even amid the storms of life. Now and again, life feels like an uphill battle with promises unkept and dreams deferred. But take heart: those moments of struggle can be transformed into stories of redemption and grace.
A meaningful Christmas is within reach even when health and finances seem limited.
I wrote a beautiful story in 1994 as a Christmas gift for the children of dear friends in Nebraska. The following year, while visiting my parents in Iowa, my father, a talented artist , illustrated it for me. These cherished works were later rescued from the clutches of a Nashville flood, a testament to their enduring impact.
"The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave or forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." - Deuteronomy 31:8
Thanks to my father's artistic touch, these illustrations breathe life into the story. Although a few bear watermarks from their watery ordeal, they've been preserved to show how imperfection can shine brilliantly.
BECAUSE GOD MAKES BEAUTY OUT OF BROKEN THINGS.
And indeed, He does. Witness this truth in our tender tale that beautifully embodies it.
"For a child is born to us, A son is given to us;
And the government Is upon His shoulder;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of PEACE." - Isaiah 9:6

He's wishing you a merry, magical, and wonderfully smelly Christmas! *wink*

I COULD SMELL PINE."
-NANCY M.
“Such a delightful book! I just read this adorable story
and kept thinking what a great story to read with my family sitting in our home over Christmas break!
Let us love generously and give generously!
I highly recommend this book. An inspiration to both young and old.”
-HEATHER H.
"What a lovely Christmas story when a bratty younger brother
surprises his sister while teaching her the true meaning of giving."
-FRANCIS F.
"We have been learning verses from the Sermon on the Mount…and so, yesterday, we read the verses about 'consider the lilies…' Then, I told them, we were going to gather in a circle, I had a special treat.
And the reaction from them was so special.
- One little boy who typically cannot sit still was still REALLY listening.
- Another 'perfect little student,' the only little girl in the class, was completely enthralled.
- A little boy who kind of 'goes his own way' at times really got into the story.
- One student pointed out he recognized the verses we had read earlier! (yay!)
- Now one little boy, who has the tenderest heart ... I thought he might burst into tears and he loved it.
They all listened intently, and could answer all the questions at the end of the book. In fact, the first little boy who appeared to think it was going to be long had obviously completely absorbed the message!
How’s that for a special Christmas class?"

Read, enjoy, and consider a timeless story with your family this Christmas about how finding a particularly memorable scent during the holiday actually brought hope to a very special family.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Several additional images were drawn by our son Avary three months after he and his brother, Bradon were adopted as Fanns in 2016. In early 2022 I added my own digital artwork. So it's really quite a special family affair! There is a musical theatre version for churches too. You may reach someone at thescripturescout@gmail.com for any questions.
