The Sunday school curriculum "Sleuth for the Truth" has an interesting origin story. It was created when popular children's books such as "Where's Waldo?" and "Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego?" were big, providing children with hours of entertainment through scavenger hunt-type puzzles. But one woman saw that while these books and television shows offered fun and joy to children, there needed to be a deeper hunt, a hunt for the best story to provide them with real lessons or knowledge about their faith.

Our story starts with this woman, Anne Gray, who had a keen eye for seeing the need for a Biblical Sunday School curriculum that wasn't just about keeping kids busy with colouring pages or worksheets from another source: she wanted kids to learn what Jesus was all about themselves and to understand the journey that led up to his birth. This woman wished children to learn about Jesus by following a step-by-step pathway through the Bible. So she began with Creation which contained the first prophecy of Jesus (Genesis 3:15), and travelled through the Bible, continuing with Israel's plight throughout its history, including its kings, judges, and prophets.

Again, this idea was to help kids see WHY they need Jesus and why it is important to follow HIM. This program and it's method was created to do just that As students progress through each book of the Bible, they can explore how each story is connected by a thread, The Golden Thread, Jesus –– and they become like detectives searching for clues or evidence to this thread. She sometimes gave children magnifying glasses to inspire students at the beginning of the class periods.

Creation and the fall of man. Genesis, Joshua, and Job. Moses, Joseph, and so many more -- but that's only the beginning! Then suddenly class takes a turn for drama and looks at the judges and the role they had in leading God's people. From Deborah to Samson, there are plenty of compelling stories with lessons to be learned! They see how, over time, the people of Israel started asking for a king instead of judges. Classroom activities like crowns around the room – yellow if they were good kings and red if bad (and sometimes a little of both!) – help kids understand these kings and their reigns. Additionally, they explore how prophets like Elijah and Jeremiah resorted to strange tactics to guide their people back towards God during this period. But which king did the Israelites need most? This question helps children realize why Jesus, the promised head-bruiser and KING, is so important and why it is essential that He be followed!

And there are activities with every single lesson, from matching games to dramas to scavenger hunts and puzzles, there is ALWAYS a supplemental activity to reinforce the amazing true stories of the Bible!

The Sleuth for the Truth curriculum has been highly successful in helping children understand precisely WHY they need to follow Jesus, which many Sunday School programs can tend to need more.
